  • The set of 4 stylish, modernist armchairs by EE Meyer for Binnehuis are based on the iconic Carimate model designed in 1959 by Vico Magistretti for Cassina, Italy, exhibited in the MoMA in New York.

Solid imbuia with simple clean lines. Rare find and highly collectable.

“The structural swelling of the legs by the seat gives them a dynamic feel and shape. It’s also a practical tool since it spreads weight right where someone sits. The armrests align with the backrest, a perfect idea of elegance. At the same height, these parts of the wooden structure create a sense of stability…..’

“A mix of Scandinavian style and Italian tradition, this piece of furniture is the symbol of modern Italian design….’

Owning an EE Meyer piece is owning a piece of history, South Africa's most sought-after mid-century furniture manufacturer. As much as we love Scandinavian furniture, some of our mid-century South African pieces are just as beautiful.

The Binnehuis furniture stores were located in Cape Town and Somerset-West, and were owned by a Dutch businessman and his wife, Mr and Mrs van Ewijck, who moved between South Africa and the Netherlands. It seems they were most prolific during the 1960s

Imbuia is not listed in the CITES Appendices, but is classified as “Vulnerable” on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
