    Henry Walter Klein

    Norwegian designer and cabinetmaker.

Henry Walter Klein, a linguistic and mathematical scholar with Norwegian and German parentage, ventured into cabinetmaking after his service in the Royal Norwegian Navy during the war.  In 1949, he went to Frederikberg Tekniske Skole (Frederikberg technical school) in Denmark, where Finn Juhl taught. In 1952 he graduated from "Boligkonsulent" (interior designer).
Klein married a Danish woman and returned to live in Norway, where he practiced interior design. With an engineer, he began to develop a new method of manufacturing plastic furniture. He sold the patent to 46 companies, including Fritz Hansen and Bramin. In 1960, the Klein family moved to Bramming in Denmark, where began his collaboration with Bramin. Post the Bramin factory's closure in the 1980s, Klein transitioned to designing sofas for the US market from his San Francisco home.

Bramin crafted some of Denmark's most coveted furniture during the mid 20th Century.

Originally N.A. Jørgensens Møbelfabrik, the Danish furniture company Bramin, hailing from the industrially forward town of Bramming, rebranded in the late 1950s to Bramin Møbler, for a more contemporary brand profile. From the 1950s through the 70s, Bramin emerged as a prominent furniture manufacturer in Denmark, offering an extensive selection of living and dining room furniture, including distinctive sideboards and storage solutions. The company was renowned for its collaborations with leading Danish designers, While high profile designers such as Johannes Andersen, Hans Olsen, Kurt Østervig, and Frank Reenskaug collaborated with Bramin, the most successful relationship was with Henry W. Klein. Norwegian-born Klein worked closely with the company before moving to Denmark with his family in 1960 to be involved in its operations.

Despite its success, Bramin ceased operations in the 1980s due to an international financial crisis. Today, Bramin's pieces are sought after for their innovative designs and emblematic Danish minimalism.
