A.H McIntosh renowned for its tradition of producing high-quality furniture through the work of forward-thinking modern designers. The company was deeply dedicated to championing Scottish design both across the United Kingdom and on an international scale.

Alexander Henry McIntosh (1835 - 1919) founded his furniture enterprise, A.H McIntosh, in 1869 in Kirkcaldy, a small town in Scotland. The company quickly expanded, earning a reputation for exceptional craftsmanship, and international interest generated from exhibiting at the World Fair in Paris in 1878, and the Sydney Exhibition in 1879. By the 1950s, A.H McIntosh started to shift from traditional styles towards contemporary modern design, heavily inspired by Scandinavian aesthetics.

The mid-20th century saw the company prioritizing the hiring of skilled industrial designers, keeping McIntosh at the cutting edge of modern furniture design. Design Directors such as Valentino (Val) Rossi, who designed the widely acclaimed 'Dunvegan' range, and Tom Robertson, introduced several iconic furniture collections characterized by their sleek lines and sculptured organic details, enjoying popularity across the UK. Each collection was named after a Scottish town, and some of the most successful designs remained in production for over two decades.

However, by the 1990s, the furniture market began to be dominated by cheaper, lower-quality imported goods. Many larger furniture manufacturers were compelled to either reduce the quality and price of their products to stay competitive or pivot to other niche markets. Today McIntosh focus on producing a wide range of school furniture under the name ESA McIntosh. Mid-century A.H McIntosh pieces are highly sought after today, celebrated for their sophisticated design and superior quality craftsmanship.
