Mid-Century EE Meyer solid imbuia dining table and 6 chairs set
A large Mid-Century imbuia dining table and 6 chairs set designed and manufactured by EE Meyer for Binnehuis.
The design of the chairs are most likely based on the Danish-designed Model 49 dining chairs by Erik Buch, circa 1950’s. They are simple yet elegant, notable for the floating seats. Superbly crafted, sculpted dining chairs with padded backrests and seats. Featuring padded “floating” seats and backrests covered in new upholstery and solid imbuia grain frames creating a lovely contrast.
The rich solid imbuia frames are very sturdy and have exceptional stunning wood grain throughout. The elegant sculpted and formed details are what makes them so desired.
The table is an absolutely exquisite and beautifully designed and crafted long dining table in solid Imbuia wood on elegant tapered legs. A real collector’s piece and investment. The wood grain and colour are beautifully active in light.
Condition Report: Very good overall vintage condition. Construction sturdy and stable; they have been re-upholstered with new foam and high-quality, high-performance duck-egg stain-resistant FibreGuard fabric from Stuart Graham Fabrics, which has Stain Free Technology, assuring it will be able to stand up to everyday stains. "Not only are these fabrics durable and easy to clean, they are also child and pet friendly as well as green conscious, endorsed by Oeko-tex. Safe for our environment, humans and pets."
The table is in very good condition, it has been meticulously cleaned and polished, it comes with a protective glass top, not pictured, (which does have a small corner chip) this kept the tabletop in close to perfect condition.

Owning an EE Meyer piece is owning a piece of history, South Africa's most sought-after mid-century furniture manufacturer.
Meyer was the South African master of understated midcentury elegance, with sober and clean designs. The majority of Meyer's furniture was made in the beautiful hardwood imbuia, also known as Brazilian walnut, because of a resemblance to some walnuts.
The Binnehuis furniture stores were located in Cape Town and Somerset-West, and were owned by a Dutch businessman and his wife, Mr and Mrs van Ewijck, who moved between South Africa and the Netherlands. It seems they were most prolific during the 1960s.
Imbuia is not listed in the CITES Appendices, but is classified as “Vulnerable” on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
