S Range teak sideboard designed in 1959 by John and Sylvia Reid for Stag Furniture.
John & Sylvia Reid for Stag S201 “S” Range Teak Sideboard, UK 1960
This exquisite and iconic low-slung compact sideboard (model S201), designed by John & Sylvia Reid for the Stag Cabinet Company Ltd, UK in 1959 and launched in 1960.
The Sideboard was part of what has become commonly referred to as the “S” Range, which was Stag’s first foray into dining room furniture. It was one of the first instances of a British manufacturer utilizing teak, preceding other firms like G Plan and McIntosh, which started using it around 1962.
Despite being well-received, it was really radical at the time, and was therefore bought in small numbers and was discontinued in 1963, resulting in its rarity and contributing to its collectability today. It is now celebrated as a classic of British design.
This iconic piece of British design is made of oiled teak veneer and features a beech-lined interior, nickel-plated steel projecting ‘tab’ handles and distinctive ‘V’ shaped legs. It comprises 4 drawers, the top one with a removable baize-lined cutlery divider and a double cupboard with 2 pull-out baize-lined trays and an adjustable shelf.
Marked with the Stag logo.
A beautiful and highly collectable piece, it makes an impressive addition to any mid-century, or contemporary setting whether placed in a living room, bedroom, dining area, hallway, or office.
Condition: The item is firm and stable and in very good vintage condition, with the odd sign of age and use. It has been meticulously cleaned, polished and refinished.
Dimensions:
Height: 70cm
Width: 137cm
Depth: 45.5cmJohn and Sylvia Reid both gained valuable experience working for influential British designer Robin Day and Hille in the early 1950s, fostered a 10-year partnership with Stag between 1952 and 1962. Their inaugural range, the C-Range, comprising a collection of modernist inspired bedroom furniture, achieved great commercial success as well as meeting with the approval of the design fraternity of the time. The S-Range, launched in 1960, was their first dining and living room collection, and was described as having “simplicity of statement, and an intelligent approach to flexibility and attention to detail.”
Taking inspiration from the prevailing Scandinavian designers of the time, and drawing on their architectural background, John and Sylvia were among the pioneers of British Mid Century Modern furniture.
Stag Furniture
Furniture for 'the young of heart and pocket' was Stag's catch cry and they certainly captured this market. Throughout the 1950s, 60s and 70s, working British households diligently saved their earnings to fill their bedrooms and dining rooms with beautiful Stag furniture.
John and Sylvia Reid were the design consultants for Stag during this period and they created several series of furniture, which varied in popularity. Initially, the husband and wife team designed furniture which was minimalist to the extreme; furniture with recesses instead of handles, furniture without a curve in sight.
It took awhile for the general public to accept such spare, functionalist designs but with time, the 'C' range and the 'Minstrel' range became the measure of design sophistication and standard issue in any aspiring British household.
Like many Mid-Century pieces, it harmoniously combines sturdy solid wood with a top-grade wood veneer.
