VERNER PANTON
Verner Panton (1926 - 1998) is one of Denmark's most influential designers - which is somewhat ironic considering that his work is rather "un-Danish" in many regards!
Verner Panton was a pioneering designer who significantly impacted design history by challenging conventional forms and materials during the 1960s and 1970s. Born in Denmark in 1926, he studied at Odense Technical College before attending the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts' Architecture Department. Between 1950 and 1952, Panton worked at Arne Jacobsen’s firm before establishing his own studio focused on experimental architecture and design in 1955.
Panton was deeply interested in plastics and innovative materials, using them to create vibrant, geometric forms influenced by Pop Art. His 1959 debut of the Cone Chair garnered numerous commissions and collaborations with manufacturers. In 1960, he launched the first inflatable furniture collection and started designing futuristic “total environments,” where walls, floors, ceilings, and furnishings shared a cohesive aesthetic.
In the early 1960s, Panton relocated to Basel and began a prolific partnership with Vitra, resulting in the creation of the iconic Panton Chair, the first cantilevered chair moulded from a single piece of plastic.
