Compact Vintage G Plan 'Fresco' Sideboard in Afromosia and Teak, 1970’s
Compact Vintage G Plan 'Fresco' Sideboard in Afromosia and Teak, 1970’s
A beautifully designed & crafted 1970s teak sideboard designed by V.B Wilkins and manufactured by G-Plan of Great Britain, designed as part of the popular 'Fresco' range.
Featuring contrasting sculptural solid teak door & drawer handles, three drawers (one being a double drawer) - all solid construction with dovetail joints front and back, large double central cupboard, two small cupboards (all with adjustable shelves), framed doors with vertical grain fronts on an elegant solid teak swooping base. A stylish and highly sought-after design. The most distinguishing features of this well-crafted design are the much loved "smiling" handles, balanced proportions, radiant teak finish in warm tones and striking grain.
The Fresco sideboard was and still remains one of G Plan’s most popular pieces. This is an elegant, classic mid-century piece with deceptively ample storage.
In excellent vintage condition, and only required minor refurbishment, it has been refinished for enhanced durability and longevity.
There was only a small chip in the veneer at the bottom back, which has been smoothed and sealed, and is inconspicuous.

Original Owner’s history: These G Plan collection pieces were purchased in the UK by their initial owners after retiring from an adventurous life, working in the Bahamas - a Scottish engineer in the oil industry that worked in Aden, India and then in the Bahamas until 1979. His career started in the oil industry by being a sailor on oil tankers during WWII, on the Hell Run crossing the Atlantic; he got a reputation as a lucky mascot as every ship he had been on was sunk on its next voyage.
We cherish the history that these furniture pieces bring with them.
G Plan - E. Gomme Ltd was based in High Wycombe, England, a major center of British furniture manufacturing. The company was revered for its range of high-quality sideboards, tables, and other cabinet goods and for pioneering the concept of furniture sets designed and made to match. G Plan were a key player in midcentury furniture design and production. Initially created in 1898 by E Gomme it wasn’t until 1952 when Grandson and designer Donald Gomme created a furniture range for the masses that evolved the company into the G Plan that we know and love today. The company were pioneers of modular furniture and understanding every buyer's unique needs. In the 1960s the rising popularity of Scandinavian design created healthy competition for G Plan and their solution was to hire Ib Kofod Larsen a Danish designer known for clean lines and comfortable materials.
G Plan ranges: Brandon 1953, Chinese White 1956, Tola & Black 1958, Limba 1960, Decorated 1961, New Tola 1961, Group 3 1962, Danish 1962, Collector 1962, Young Idea 1963, Country Style 1964, Quadrille 1964, Fresco 1966, Form 5 1967.
